The department of the Creuse (23), named for its main river, is situated in the central part of France, to the north west of the Massif Central. The highest point is Puy Pendu at 977m on the plateau de Millevaches (this means 1,000 sources not 1,000 cows so explains the lack of the beasts), near Gentioux. The altitude is highest is the south east and falls away gradually towards the north west, where the north of the department is between 300m and 400m.
