General Department Information

The department of Creuse (23), named for its main river, is situated in the central part of France, to the north west of the Massif Central. The highest point is in the forest of Châteauvert at 932m on the plateau de Millevaches (this means 1,000 sources rather than cows), in the commune of Saint-Oradoux-de-Chirouze near La Courtine. The altitude is highest is the south east and falls away gradually towards the north west, where the north of the department is between 300m and 400m.
