connecting to wifi hotspots

I wonder if one of the resident techie types could assist me please. I am coming out to france for the whole of the summer and have decided I can't last that long without an internet connection. I've got the laptop and got it connected up to my wireless router and downloaded all the stuff I think I may need. So far so good. I've never used a wifi site and am just wondering how you go about it. There is a cafe in Ahun which appears to be my nearest one, which advertises wifi, but I don't want to appear a pillock my wandering in there and not knowing what I am doing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as my French is also abysmal.

Hello
We use the internet cafe in Aubusson and there you just go in and say Internet and they point you to a computer. I suspect that if they see you walk in with your laptop they will assume what you want and it will be OK, some places have a code that they give you, which you enter in your search engine and others don't bother with a code, such as McDonalds in Gueret.
Hope that helps a bit. Maybe otherwise you could just go for a coffee first and spy on any other people in there? I know I was concerned the first time I did it but it was OK.

Hi Lynn, thanks for the info. I go into Aubusson to the supermarket, so I can give it a try next time I'm there. Where is the internet cafe please. Perhaps I'll do as you suggest and have a coffee there first so I can get the hang of things. How do they charge.
thanks again, regards, Ian

There are two on the main street, the one I use is just after the France hotel, the man in there speaks good English too and runs it with his wife who doesn't have any English; but it's just an internet cafe, although you can buy a drink whilst you're surfing! They charge about 2 euros an hour now, it's come down over the last 6 months. You pay when you have finished and they are not generally good at keeping note of how long you're there, usually to your advantage rather than theirs, lol. I try to note when I go in so I know what I'm doing. They charge by the half hour as well, so it's very reasonable. They are very helpful and friendly.
